What is an Interrotron Mark III, and why do you need one?

An Interrotron works like a teleprompter that shows the director’s face instead of the script. With an Interrotron rental, talent can have face-to-face conversations with the interviewer while simultaneously looking directly into the camera.

An Interrotron rental will significantly improve the screen presence of untrained talent.

Documentarian Errol Morris invented the device for his interviews with children and other non-professional talent. The Interrotron’s name combines the words interview and terror because it makes camera interviews more comfortable, especially for untrained talent.

Interrotron rentals are one of our most popular services because they help directors get footage faster, saving time and money.  Just imagine the difference between answering questions with a camera lens and speaking with your interviewer face-to-face.

Interrotron Rental FAQ

  1. What is the Interrotron rental offering?

The Interrotron Mark III rental is priced at $1,295 for a 10-hour day. It includes a trained operator, two Interrotron units (for both director and talent), a second camera with tripod, monitor with hood, and all necessary cables and connectors.

  2. How does an Interrotron differ from a standard teleprompter?

Unlike a regular teleprompter displaying text, the Interrotron shows the interviewer's face to the subject, and the subject's face to the interviewer, via beam-splitter mirrors, allowing both to maintain direct eye contact with the camera while conversing naturally.

  3. Which setup versions are available?

    • Mark III Studio Setup: Talent and director share the same physical space.

    • Mark II / Road Warrior: Director attends remotely, connected by the Skytronn system, enabling live face-to-face interviews from separate locations.

  4. Why use an Interrotron?

Built by Errol Morris, the Interrotron enhances authenticity and reduces subject nervousness. The direct connection often yields stronger performance in fewer takes, ideal for documentary-style or testimonial interviews.

  5. Who is this system ideal for?

It's especially effective with untrained talent, children, or subjects who find camera interviews intimidating. Also well-suited for seasoned professionals seeking intimate delivery. Great for documentaries, branded content, executive messages, and any scenario where eye contact amplifies impact.

  6. What equipment specs are included?

    • Talent Unit: 19″ HD monitor (HDMI), optical-quality mirror, professional Gold Plate Autocue mount with sliding camera plate on 15 mm rods.

    • Director's Unit: 1080p monitor with HD-SDI/HDMI/component pass-through, tripod, cables, and a professional HD camera.

    • The operator handles setup, script display, camera compatibility, and system troubleshooting.

  7. Can the Interrotron be used remotely?

Yes. The Road Warrior edition enables remote interviews with the director and subject in separate locations, using the Skytronn remote interface over Zoom or similar platforms.

  8. Is a professional operator included?

Yes. A trained operator is part of every rental package, responsible for delivery, setup, operation, and monitoring throughout the shoot.

  9. What locations are served?

Interrotron rentals are available in major media markets including New York City, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia, with remote shipping options for international locations as needed.

  10. How do I book or prepare?

You can reserve an Interrotron by selecting either the Mark III or Road Warrior option on the American Movie Company website or calling their booking line. Once booked, you'll receive instructions for script submission, technical requirements, and any remote coordination needed.
