The End of Homework? MIT Warns AI Can Now Ace Nearly Any Undergrad Assignment

For the past couple of years, the rise of generative AI has sparked endless debate over cheating, plagiarism checkers, and the future of homework. But when the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)—one of the world's most prestigious engineering and science institutions—sounds the alarm, higher education has no choice but to listen.

According to a report published by MIT’s ad hoc AI committee, modern artificial intelligence models have crossed a critical threshold: they can now credibly solve almost any assignment in an undergraduate curriculum.

The findings are forcing educators to confront an uncomfortable reality: the traditional homework-and-exam model may be broken beyond repair.

Beyond Essay Writing: STEM Is No Longer Immune

When ChatGPT first arrived, much of the initial panic focused on humanities departments—professors worried about AI-generated essays, literature reviews, and history papers. Math, engineering, and coding courses were widely assumed to have a built-in buffer, as language models frequently hallucinated complex calculations or multi-step logic.

That buffer has dissolved.

Co-chaired by professors Eric Klopfer and Samuel Madden, the MIT committee reached a stark conclusion:

AI "can produce credible solutions and provide reasonable responses to almost any written assignment in our undergraduate curriculum, including essays, math and science problems, proofs, and coding assignments."

When a model can write working code, construct mathematical proofs, and generate nuanced analysis at an Ivy-plus level, the standard takeaway assignment no longer measures a student's actual competence.

The Hidden Cultural Shift on Campus

The disruption isn't limited to academic integrity and grade inflation. The report revealed that student reliance on AI tools is altering the social fabric of university life in unexpected ways:

  • Empty Office Hours: Attendance at faculty and teaching assistant office hours has visibly dropped as students turn to instant chatbot explanations instead.

  • Fading Study Groups: Collaborative late-night study sessions in dorms, libraries, and student lounges are dwindling, replaced by solo interactions with AI tools.

  • Quiet Discussion Boards: Online class forums and peer message boards are seeing reduced participation.

When the friction of problem-solving is removed by an on-demand AI assistant, students inadvertently miss out on peer collaboration, debate, and the collective struggle that defines the college experience.

Going "Analog" in a Digital World

Universities across the country are scrambling to respond, often by leaning hard into the analog past:

  • Pen and Paper Revival: Courses are increasingly mandating blue books, handwritten essays, and in-class problem-solving where devices are forbidden.

  • Oral Examinations: Professors are turning to viva voce—oral defenses—to verify whether students truly understand the work they submit.

  • Device Bans & Policy Overhauls: The University of Chicago Law School moved to prohibit laptops and phones in 1L classrooms, while Princeton University recently ended its century-old tradition of unproctored Honor Code exams following AI-related cheating incidents.

What Comes Next?

Banning technology outright has rarely worked in education; students eventually enter a workforce that expects them to use AI tools effectively. Yet evaluating students on work an algorithm can replicate in seconds is rapidly becoming obsolete.

MIT’s findings make one thing clear: patching old syllabi with detector software won’t cut it. Higher education is on the brink of an unavoidable overhaul—one that redefines what it means to teach, learn, and test human understanding in an AI-dominated world.
