Is California Filmmaking Making a Comeback? Orange County Might Be the Signal

Most producers I know stopped seriously considering California years ago.

Not because they wanted to leave,
but because the math simply stopped working.

Now, something has changed. And it’s worth paying attention.

Orange County is quietly emerging as one of the most compelling production opportunities in the country.

With the expanded program from the California Film Commission, along with new incentives aimed at productions outside Los Angeles, the conversation is beginning to shift in a meaningful way.

Here’s what I’m seeing on the ground:

  • Tax credits are finally strong enough to significantly impact budgets

  • Bonus incentives are encouraging productions to move beyond the traditional Los Angeles zone

  • You still get the California look, without the same level of friction

  • Permitting tends to be smoother and more predictable

  • Crews, talent, and infrastructure remain easily accessible

  • Locations are diverse and production-friendly

What stands out most is this:

For the first time in years, you can make a rational case to keep a project in California and not get dismissed for it.

That’s new.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see a real shift in production conversations over the next 12 to 18 months.

If you’re budgeting a project right now, Orange County deserves a spot on your list.

Curious what others are seeing, are you starting to reconsider California?
