About

What is an LED Video Wall?

A video wall is a special way to set up multiple monitors. It is made up of several computer monitors, video projectors, or TVs that are tiled together or overlapped to make one large screen. LCD panels, Direct View LED arrays, blended projection screens, Laser Phosphor Displays, and rear projection cubes are examples of common display technologies.

VIDEO WALL

Screens made to be used in video walls usually have narrow bezels so that there is less space between the active display areas. They are also made to last a long time.

Displays like these generally have the hardware needed to connect other displays of the same type together, as well as connections to send power, video, and command signals between screens in a chain.

A command signal may, for example, power all screens in the video wall on or off, or adjust the brightness of a single screen after a bulb change (in projection-based screens).

There are instances of video walls in control rooms, stadiums, and other large public venues. The 100-screen video wall at McCarran International Airport acts as an advertising platform for the airport’s 40 million annual travelers. Smaller venues can also benefit from video walls when people can see the screens both up close and far away, which requires both a high pixel density and a large size. For instance, the 100-inch video display in the main foyer of the Lafayette Library and Learning Center is large enough for passersby to view images from a distance while simultaneously giving enough quality for nearby observers to read about forthcoming activities.

A Reason to use a Video Wall instead of a Single Large Screen

You can change the layout of the tiles. Another is that you can get more screen area per unit cost and more pixels per unit cost with a video wall. This is because it costs more to make single screens that are an odd shape, size, or resolution.

Controllers

A video wall controller (or “processor”) splits a single image into parts for individual screens. Video wall controllers can be categorized as follows:

Hardware-based controllers.

Software-based PC & video-card controllers.

Hardware-based controllers

Technological gadgets are created for special purposes. Most of the time, they are made up of a group of chips that process video, and they don’t have an operating system. Hardware video wall controllers are reliable and high-performing. Cost and lack of flexibility are disadvantages.

One example of a video wall controller that is really straightforward is a scaler with a single input and several outputs. It can take one video input and divide the image into pieces that match the displays on the video wall.

Most professional video walls also have a controller built in (sometimes called an integrated video matrix processor or splitter).

Software-based PC & video-card controllers

A computer that runs an operating system (like Windows, Linux, or Mac) and has special graphics cards with multiple outputs and, if desired, video capture input cards. Control rooms and situational centers require video wall controllers with industrial-grade chassis. A software-based video wall controller can launch programs like maps, VoIP clients (to display IP cameras), SCADA clients, and digital signage software that can directly use the video wall’s full resolution. This is why this method is usually more expensive than the hardware splitter. Because of this, many control rooms and high-end digital signage use controllers that are based on software. The quality of the graphic cards and the management software both affect how well the software controller works. For LED screens or projectors, video wall controllers often include bezel correction (overlapping the pictures to blend edges).(Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia “Video Wall”,14 March 2022.)
