If you’ve been waiting for the new “Top Gun: Maverick” movie release, you’ll have to wait a little longer… well, until July 2021.
In the meantime, watch the new trailer for “Top Gun: Maverick”
“Top Gun: Maverick” is the sequel to the hit 1986 film “Top Gun” starring Tom Cruise. Like many of our 2020 film expectations (which we talked about here), the new Top Gun movie release has been postponed until next Summer. The film was originally supposed to hit theaters this month, and that’s what I would be talking about had Paramount not pushed it way back. You can mark your calendars for July 2, 2021 and though it feels like a really long time to wait for a Tom Cruise movie, let me assure you that time does fly (tempus fugit) when there is a Pandemic. Doesn’t it feel like July 2020 way just last week?
“We truly believe that there is no movie-viewing experience like the one enjoyed in theaters,” Paramount’s president of domestic distribution, Chris Aronson, and president of international theatrical distribution Mark Viane, said in a statement. “We are committed to the theatrical experience and our exhibition partners, and want to stress that we are confident that, when the time comes, audiences everywhere will once again enjoy the singular joy of seeing Paramount films on the big screen.”
“Top Gun: Maverick” takes place more than thirty years after the first movie. Talk about waiting a long time for a sequel! In the film one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell finds himself right where he belongs after three decades of service, stalling any advancement in rank that would ground him and testing the limits as a courageous test pilot. The plot follows Maverick as he trains the next generation of naval aviators.
In the film “Top Gun: Maverick” Tom Cruise shares the screen with Miles Teller, who plays Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, who is the son of Maverick’s former Radar Intercept Officer and best friend Goose, who dies in the original movie. Jennifer Connelly is playing Maverick’s love interest. Jon Hamm is also joining the cast as a high ranking Navy Officer, but few character details have been revealed. Val Kilmer also returns to his role as “Iceman” but we are not sure if he will be the villain or how substantial this role will be. The film is directed by Joseph Kosinski, whose previous work includes “Only the Brave”, “Oblivion” and “Tron: Legacy”.
Times were a bit different during the first “Top Gun” movie, because of the Cold War between the U.S and the Soviet Union audiences of the time assumed that the bad guys were Russian. For political reasons, however, the film is intentional in its ambiguity when it comes to identifying the enemy. So we really don’t know that the villain was Russian… even though his nickname was “Iceman”. According to the markings on the fictional aircrafts in the film, the villain is an “amorphous combination of three countries”, The Soviet Union, China and North Korea. One might also come to the conclusion that the villain is Communism.
In this new movie, Maverick’s teaching skills are put to the test during an inevitable confrontation between the U.S and an outside threat. Rumor has it that this new nemesis might be Iran, because of current relations with the country, however, this is all speculation and we do not know for sure. This rumor came to be because of the appearance of a particular aircraft in the film that’s only used by Iran in the real world. The truth is that action-packed films where there are clear good guys and bad guys are great for ticket sales, but “Top Gun: Maverick” is set to be a character-driven piece not a war movie.
From watching the trailer you can see that this new film does take some of those lighthearted and shirtless moments from the classic, yet it’s suggested that this sequel is more intense than the first movie. Maverick has a lot of self-destructive issues to fight and that is most likely the real villain of this story.
