Hi, it’s me, again…

Maria Lopez aka “M.Lo”, Dancer, Prompter Princess and Interrotron Technician.

By the way, as many of you know I’m a professional dancer but also a total sports nut.

So, when I heard I was going to use my Interrotron for an interview with the great Charles Barkley I totally freaked out. I actually had a date that night which I broke immediately. (By the way the jerk did not understand at all so totally full of himself and so muy macho was he and so I doubt we’ll ever see his face again. Who cares? Right? But I digress).

On a recent TV interview, basketball star and legend, Charles Barkley was staring into my teleprompter and seeing the director looking right back at him back at him. Yes, Charles Barkley, my hero, was using an Interrotron, “my Interrotron” for the very first time.

You may know that, Interrotron technology was first invented and developed by famed documentary director, Errol Morris. Mr Morris used the amazing Interrotron device in virtually all of his award winning documentary video shoots and now the cool machine has found its way into the general teleprompter universe where it’s used to calm down inexperienced talent, give them the correct eye lines and allow them to speak directly to camera in a comfortable and relaxed demeanor.

The idea is simple. The result fantastic. I set up the main unit in front of the talent. In this case Charles Barkley. Who by the way really loved it. (And I got his autograph later. Yesssssss.)

The Interrotron lets the director see exactly what camera operator sees and what the audience will eventually see.

So, with my Interrotron, set up as the main unit with the main camera on Charles Barkley, he was able to be just himself, very relaxed and proceeded to have a natural conversation with the director. You see I put the director in video village where Barkley could not see him directly, only through my good ol’ Interrotron.

The other smaller camera (included with the unit) was mounted on a second teleprompter which was on a tripod (also included) off stage in video village with my director. So instead of staring into a cold camera lens, Barkley looked at and talked directly with the director.

My Interrotron allowed both talent and Interviewer had a comfortable, informal, relaxed conversation.

Thus Barkley’s eye-lines were always perfectly correct. And he could not only hear the director’s voice, he could see the directors expressions. Thereby giving him a clearer idea of the question. The director, more importantly has the same additional, invaluable info. He sees all the talent’s body language and can more accurately assess what he has in the take. The director can see at every second not only the correct framing and right lighting for his actor but exactly what he’s getting visually. So there was no down time. No time consuming, energy draining, retakes.

So, because of me and my Interrotron, (actually The American Movie Company’s Interrotron), we were able to wrap much sooner than anticipated and I was off to my favorite Meat Packing District night club (sans boyfriend which is the way I usually prefer it. Hey, who knows who you’ll meet) and getting outside several dirty martinis. The dirtier the ‘way better”.

Ok, so in the end it was definitely “win win” for all involved in the Interrotron v. Charles Barkley contest.

The Interrotron (Autocue) as you understand, at this point, is basically two units. The main talent unit comes delivered in a large , professional prompter which is delivered in a big Pelican case. The second Pelican case contains a smaller promprer, video camera and tripod. You can rent one from me in New York and from my pal, Candice in LA
