By Christen Madrazo Dateline: Tribeca NYC I’ll admit it. The first time I heard the word “Interrotron,” my mind conjured up images of a 21st century laser torture device in a re-imagined Spanish Inquisition. Once I discovered its true meaning, however, I realized immediately that my day-to-day routine might never be the same. Let me explain. I’m an executive speech coach—that is, my job is to train executives, attorneys, diplomats and other high-level clients in the arts of effective public speaking. Historically, that has involved working with individuals as they prepare to give a major address before a shareholder meeting, a trial, or a governmental entity. More and more, however, […]
For some bizarre reason, there is a idea floating around that no one in the history of the world used a teleprompter no less a presidential prompter before Obama. Well obviously he is really good at it. It is an engaging, charismatic speaker, as is his wife Michelle (for whom we have had the pleasure of prompting for with on of our presidential units.) The reality is the fact that virtually all politicians, executives, diplomats and in fact virtually anyone who needs to speak before an audience should use a presidential prompter. It just releases one of the stress related to trying to memorize all those lines. Then one can […]
Mitt Romney Experiences Possible Teleprompter Runtime Error Jul 11, 2012 04:03 PM by Ilya Gerner | Comments: 2 No one knows exactly why Mitt Romney chose to speak before the NAACP conference in Houston earlier today. Perhaps his intended audience wasn’t the African American leaders in the audience inasmuch as moderate white voters, who prefer the Republican agenda delivered to the soundtrack of racial harmony rather than racist dog whistles. Maybe he thought the NAACP stood for the National Association for the Advancement of Corporate Persons. Or perhaps he was just continuing his commitment to the 1% of Americans by making sure that he would receive no more than 1% […]
Shooting two cameras simultaneously through the same prompter. This is a question asked of us many times and, frankly, we thought it possible. But we never tried. Our bad. Put simply, we did not have an answer and were loath to tell a client we could do it when we really didn’t know if we could. OK, so a client orders our large 17″ Master Series prompter for a 7D shoot which makes very little sense. That is until we realize he is planning on shooting two cameras through the one teleprompter. The reason is obvious. He wants to preserve the proper eye-line on both cameras. He doesn’t want to […]
The human voice is like a muscle. To work really well, it should be warmed up. There’s nothing magical about the warmup, you basically want to get each part of the anatomy involved in vocal production to get moving before speaking. Good actors know this and are good at warming up their voices. But a good speech coach can guide non-actors through a quick warmup. Here’s how it’s done. 1) Quickly explain to the presenter the importance of warmup — that it will make their job easier since they’re less likely to trip up on words when they’re warmed up. Also they’ll sound a lot better! 2) Guide them through […]
Here are a few tips for teleprompter operators. You might think me picky in writing these out, but they are time savers on shoots and for anyone who has ever had the privilege (or pain) of producing, you know time=money in film, television, and video production as much, if not more, than in any other field. Every minute counts. Every second counts. In hundreds and often thousands of dollars. Tip #1: Talent dictates speed. Basically, all you are doing when prompting is following along with them — when they speed up, you speed up. When they slow down, you slow down. And keep their words right by the cursor. It’s […]
